New stained glass for 8s!

Recently, firefighters at Duluth's station 8 in Spirit Valley were presented with an amazing piece of art! Denfeld High School students Michael Smith and Wesley Cook made the DFD-themed stained glass piece in their "Stained Glass Metals and Fibers" art class. The piece turned out great! We're excited to get it hung up inside of station 8.

Water park fun!

Last week, several members of Local 101 volunteered at a local indoor water park to help carry kids and adults who cannot walk up the four-story waterslide stairs. The event was part of the Courage Center's Mono-Ski Madness, a local downhill skiing event that hosts a pizza party for participants at the waterpark every year.

Toy Drive Success!

The toy drive was a success! We raised $3330 from our active and retired firefighters! This is the 5th year we have worked with Shopko for the purchase of the toys.  They are wonderful! In fact, Shopko employees donated money to add to ours! Shopko then gave us 10% more in gift cards to use. They even hired a cashier just for us to help with the shopping spree.

FF James Gusoff took up a collection at the Retirement Celebration for Lt. Allen Taylor for FF Donavan Dickerson who lost his home to fire on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Through the generosity of party participants $448.00 was collected to aid him. Later in the week, Sgt. Darnell McLaurin pooled firefighters together to assist with boarding up the fire ravaged home on Concord Street in Detroit.

By order of the International as a result of an appeal decision rendered by the General President, by-laws are to be voted on by the membership. Voting will begin on August 7th and close on August 21st. The other two by-law appeal items were denied by the International. The by-laws have been posted on the bulletin boards of each station.

Saginaw firefighters saved by $2 million federal grant

SAGINAW, MI — U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee's office sent an email Wednesday afternoon, July 29, proudly announcing Saginaw will receive a $2 million grant that will prevent 13 firefighters from being laid off this fall. About 15 minutes later, about a dozen firefighters jumped into their turnout gear and sped toward a fire on Saginaw's East Side.

It is that time of year again.  2015 marks the 15th annual Scholarship Golf Outing benefitting the William Phenegar and William Kappmeyer Memorial Scholarships.  This year is shaping up to be the best one yet!  Warm up at the complimentary driving range and grab a quick lunch before setting off for 18 holes of golf with refreshments on the course.  Plenty of fun for all.

The 48/96 Trial Schedule Ballot will be held August 3rd, 4th, 5th, 2015. Carriers will be going to all stations and Admin during the shifts on these days. If you are NOT ON shift you may vote at the office Monday, Tuesday and Wed. from 8 am - 1 pm. You may also vote via your IAFF 851 website email account if you are NOT ON shift during the voting days.
Chester City Cadet Class Bravo

Today the 17 recruits start orientation at the fire headquarters after spending the last 5 months at the Philadelphia Fire Academy. These cadets have spent the last few months becoming nationally registered EMTs as well as certified firefighters in the state of Pennsylvania. They are now apprentice firefighters and will receive their station and platoon assignments this week.
